Nike vs Adidas Compression Socks: Classic II or Milano 23 for Your Club?

If you are choosing between Nike vs Adidas compression socks for a club, the two to compare are the Nike Classic II OTC and the Adidas Milano 23. Both are $20 a pair at Empulse, both are over-the-calf match socks with a snug compression fit, and both cover shin pads the way the Laws of the Game require. The real differences are colour range, sizing, fabric and fit details, and that is what decides the order for most teams.

Here is the side-by-side, plus how to size a whole squad without ending up with a box of socks nobody fits.

Nike vs Adidas compression socks: the quick comparison

Durability Reinforced heel and toe Reinforced heel and toe
Fabric note Lightweight cushioning 99% recycled polyester

Short version: pick Nike if your club colour is gold, sky blue or royal blue, because the Milano 23 range we stock does not include those colours. Pick Adidas if you want the finer size steps for juniors or a recycled fabric story. If your colour is black, white, navy, red or green, either works, so match the brand to your jersey.

Nike Classic II OTC: the widest colour range

The Nike Classic II OTC socks (style code SX5728) are a staple over-the-calf match and training sock. Nike Dri-FIT fabric moves sweat away from the skin, and the anatomical left and right construction means each sock sits the way it should on the foot, rather than twisting during a match.

The big selling point for clubs is colour. Eight options, including University Gold and University Blue, cover a lot of kits that other match socks miss. Sizes run XS to XL in one listing, so kids and adults can order from the same page.

Adidas Milano 23: finer sizing and recycled fabric

The Adidas Milano 23 socks are made from 99% recycled polyester with AEROREADY moisture control, targeted cushioning at the arch and ankle, and a reinforced heel and toe for a full season of wash cycles.

Where the Milano 23 stands out is sizing. Seven size bands, starting at kids 10.5K to 12K and running up to adult US 11.5 to 13, mean fewer players stuck between sizes. That makes a real difference for junior clubs, where a sock that is too big bunches in the boot and one that is too small rolls down by half time.

Are Nike and Adidas club socks true compression socks?

This is worth being clear about. The Classic II and Milano 23 are club match socks with a snug, compression-style fit through the arch and calf. They are built to hold shin pads in place and stay up for 90 minutes. They are not medical-grade graduated compression socks.

Research on dedicated compression garments points mostly to recovery. A 2017 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine found the largest benefits were for strength recovery, particularly more than 24 hours after exercise. If recovery is the goal, a dedicated knee-high compression sock is the better tool. Our El Toro compression socks guide covers that option, and our grip socks vs compression socks explainer breaks down which job each sock does.

What the Laws of the Game say about socks

Match socks are compulsory kit. Under IFAB Law 4, shin pads must be covered by the socks, and any tape or material worn on the outside of a sock must be the same colour as the part of the sock it covers. That is why ordering the right colour matters. If a player wears a grip sock underneath and a cut club sock over the top, any sock tape needs to match too.

How to size socks for a whole squad

  1. Collect shoe sizes, not clothing sizes. Sock sizing follows the foot.
  2. Check the size label on each product. Nike and Adidas use different size bands, so do not assume a Nike Small equals an Adidas small size.
  3. Size juniors to their current foot. A sock that is too big bunches in the boot and causes blisters.
  4. Order two pairs per player. One pair is always in the wash on game day.
  5. Add spares. A few extra pairs in common sizes cover new players and lost socks.

Socks are sold as is and are not customised. The rest of the kit can be, though. Empulse adds club crests, names and numbers to jerseys, shorts, jackets and bags, which pair well with the matching sock colour. The new Nike Academy 2 Youth Jersey in Black or White goes with almost any sock colour, and our custom soccer shorts guide covers the middle of the kit.

Pair your match socks with grip socks

Plenty of players wear a short grip sock underneath their club sock for traction inside the boot. Our look at what the research says about grip socks explains why. Browse the grip socks range from $16.98, or see the full compression socks collection.
