Hoodie GSM is simply the weight of the fabric in grams per square metre, and it is the most useful number on any hoodie spec sheet. For most Australian clubs, schools and gyms, 290 to 320 GSM is the year-round sweet spot. Step up to 350 GSM if your squad trains through a genuine cold snap, and treat 500 GSM as a premium keepsake piece rather than a training layer.

That is the short version. The longer version is more interesting, because most people use the number backwards.

What hoodie GSM actually measures

GSM stands for grams per square metre. Weigh one square metre of the fabric, and that is your figure. On its own it tells you nothing about softness, durability or how well a print will sit.

What it does do is act as a very reliable stand-in for thickness. Research published in Frontiers in Materials measured fabric gram weight, thickness and heat resistance together and found gram weight and thickness moved almost perfectly in step, with both showing a strong positive relationship to how much heat the fabric held back.

So GSM is a shortcut. Heavier fabric is thicker fabric, and thicker fabric traps more still air against the skin. The warmth comes from the trapped air, not from the grams. That distinction matters, because it explains why a well-cut 320 GSM hoodie can feel warmer than a badly cut 350.

The mistake most Australian clubs make

Here is the thing almost nobody tells you when you are ordering club hoodies: the biggest risk is not buying too light. It is buying too heavy.

Think about when a club hoodie is actually worn. Arriving at training on a cool evening. Standing on the sideline for twenty minutes. Walking back to the car. In most of the country, that window sits somewhere between 8 and 18 degrees, and the wearer is usually moving. A 500 GSM hoodie in those conditions gets taken off and tied around a waist within ten minutes.

How hoodie GSM changes your printing and embroidery options

This is where fabric weight stops being a comfort question and starts being a decoration question, and it is the part clubs almost never think about before they order.

• Heavier fleece takes embroidery better. A 350 or 500 GSM body gives the needle something firm to work into, so a club crest sits flat instead of puckering. On very light fleece, a dense crest can pull the fabric in around the edges.
• Lighter, flatter fleece suits large-format print. A big back print or a sponsor bar across the chest needs an even surface. Smoother 290 to 320 GSM faces give you that.
• Brushed and high-pile backs need more care. The softer the inside face, the more the fabric can shift under the platen, so allow for it in artwork placement rather than assuming millimetre precision.
• Heavy French terry is a premium canvas. On a 500 GSM body, tonal embroidery looks expensive in a way that print rarely matches.

Fit does as much work as weight

Two hoodies at the same GSM can feel completely different. The Relax 5161 has a drop shoulder and a longer body, so it wears warmer than the number suggests because there is more fabric covering more of you. The Box 5171 is oversized through the chest with a shorter, boxier hem, which reads as streetwear rather than teamwear.

A practical rule for squads: relaxed and boxy fits are far more forgiving across a mixed-size group. If you are ordering for thirty players in five sizes without a fit session, a relaxed cut will produce fewer complaints than an athletic one. What to ask about the fabric before you order

GSM is one number. Two others are worth asking about, especially if your club has a sustainability position or you are ordering for juniors.

The first is chemical safety. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 grades textiles by how much skin contact they involve, with the strictest limits reserved for products made for babies and children under three, and progressively lighter requirements for items worn against the skin and items worn over other layers. It is a useful question to put to any supplier.

The second is recycled content. The 5164 half-zip uses a recycled poly-cotton fleece. If a supplier claims recycled content, the Global Recycled Standard is the benchmark to ask about, since it sets a higher minimum recycled percentage for labelling and adds social and environmental requirements around processing and chemicals.

For most of the country, 290 to 320 GSM covers autumn through spring without overheating. Clubs in Canberra, Tasmania or the alpine regions get more use out of 350 GSM. Above 400 GSM you are buying a piece for occasions rather than everyday training.

Is a higher GSM hoodie better quality?

No. GSM measures weight, not quality. A poorly knitted 400 GSM fleece will pill faster than a well-made 290. Look at fibre content, knit construction and finishing alongside the weight, not the weight on its own.

Which hoodie weight works best for embroidered club crests?

350 GSM and above gives the cleanest embroidery result because the fabric supports the stitch density without distorting. Mid-weight bodies still embroider well, they just need a slightly more conservative crest size.

Do heavier hoodies shrink more?
