How to wash and care for cotton and polyester without ruining them

Cotton and polyester are the two fabrics you will encounter most in your wardrobe, and both have different quirks when it comes to washing, drying, and storing. Getting this wrong costs you fabric quality, print integrity, and years off the life of the garment. Here is a plain guide to getting it right.

Check the care label first

This sounds obvious but most people skip it. Some polyester blends need a cooler wash cycle. Printed or embroidered pieces need gentler handling. If in doubt, the label is always the source of truth.

Pre-treat stains immediately

Time is the variable that matters most with stains. The sooner you treat it, the better the outcome. Dab rather than rub. Test any stain remover on an inside seam first. Never put a stained piece in a hot dryer before the stain is out, as heat sets the stain permanently.

Wash in cold water

Hot water shrinks cotton and warps polyester over time. Cold water keeps the fabric stable, reduces fade, and uses less energy. Use a delicate or gentle cycle where possible.

Skip harsh detergents and bleach

Heavy-duty detergents fade prints and degrade fabric fibres over time. Gentle, plant-based options are better for printed cotton and polyester blends. Avoid bleach unless the label specifically allows it. For whites, oxygen bleach is a safer option than chlorine bleach.

Drying: air dry where possible

Line drying inside out prevents UV fading and heat warping. If you use a dryer, keep it on a low setting. Polyester handles heat better than cotton, but both last longer with air drying where practical.
